In my work, I utilize comics and the recurring image of the cartoonish bird to address difficult themes of bigotry, trauma, spousal abuse and alienation. My work is mean to shock, anger, and antagonize the viewer. My artwork is a product of my experiences, and I use the figure of the bird (Burd) to represent myself. This bird is inspired by the many parakeets my grandmother had in her backyard in Puerto Rico. I wanted to make this bird easy to see, with simple bold lines that are easy to draw and spray paint. These bold lines give this character a similar appearance to the Hanna-Barbera cartoons of the ’70s.
