Love Over the North Shore - Acrylic on NOAA Chart

Lisa Boemer is a visual artist whose work blends plein air painting with a love for maps of the sea, especially NOAA nautical charts. Using acrylics and oils, she explores the meeting point of observation and imagination—capturing the rhythm of the coast, the play of light, and the layered history of place.

Lisa often begins outdoors, and later brings those impressions into the studio, where she works on NOAA charts, letting the printed coastlines, depths, and navigation markings guide the composition. Each piece becomes both a record of a real location and an emotional map of time spent there.

In addition to her plein air work, Lisa creates abstract paintings that grow out of her connection to the sea and landscape. These pieces are guided by movement, texture, and layered color rather than a specific view. Using acrylics and oils, she builds depth through transparent glazes, scraping, and mark-making. The result often suggests shifting tides, changing weather, or the unseen energy beneath the surface. Her abstract work gives her the freedom to explore mood, memory, and the passage of time in a more intuitive way.

Lisa began painting seriously after another life-changing experience with breast cancer, which reignited her creative path. Her paintings have been accepted into juried exhibitions at the Copley Society of Art 2025 National Show ~ Expression Now: An Impressionist Approach was juried by Daisy Alejandre, Curatorial Assistant at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Lisa continues to find joy in painting, teaching, and welcoming visitors to explore her studio through Waltham Open Studios.
