2:00pm Chasing and Repoussé demo by Tracey Tranen
Chasing and Repoussé are two of the oldest metal working techniques. They give malleable metal height, depth, texture and character using a hammer and specialized tools to created lines (chasing/embossing) and depth/dimension (repousse). The design is frequently traced onto the metal piece at the start. For this demonstration, a jewelry-sized flat sheet of metal is anchored in a bowl full of pitch (a pine resin-based substance with a brick dust and a lubricant) while the work is in progress to be formed into a 3-dimensional piece.

Special Exhibit: The Artwork of Shawn Laswelll
144 Moody Street, Building 4, Gallery 8

Shawn was known for hanging his signature vinyl LP records, splattered in vivid colors, all around Waltham, more than 2,000 of them over 15 years! Anyone walking by could enjoy them, and many did – some even taking the discs to decorate their homes. Beloved for his generosity and free spirit, Shawn died unexpectedly on July 24, 2025, at the age of 52.
In honor of Shawns’ contributions to the City of Waltham and in the spirit of his love of visual art, a scholarship has been set up to benefit qualifying Waltham graduates in furthering their studies in visual art at an accredited institution. Make your contribution to the visual arts in Waltham by purchasing a Shawn Laswell original!
