Artist Spotlight: Wendy Jo New

Updated: Sep 22, 2025

Location: Metalwerx at Lincoln Studios

Wendy Jo New attended her first metalsmithing class when she moved to Boston from the D.C. area in 1998. She describes it as something she had always wanted to pursue and, after that first course, she was hooked immediately. She gradually built a metalsmithing business, and took a chance once her youngest went off to college. She retired from her previous career in educational policy and made her art her full-time career in 2012. Working primarily with precious metals (gold, silver, palladium, and platinum), Wendy Jo draws inspiration from color, architecture, and science. Her contemporary jewelry is unique and bright, ranging from funky to classic to even slightly primordial. When asked why it is important to foster a community of artists, she says: “[…] it's great to bounce ideas off of people when needed, I'm able to assist people when they want help, and it's always fun to see what others are designing and making.” Wendy Jo also teaches metalsmithing, coming full circle since that first Boston course that hooked her.

Where else can you find her work?
