Andrea Tishman says she has never been good at taking advice. She creates in a variety of mediums, including oil paint, pastel and charcoal, and printmaking. Recently, she has begun branching out into using repurposed materials, specifically used tea bags. Her Teabag Series features portraits of birds and insects whose populations are in decline. The images of these creatures convey a liveliness, with many of the birds depicted with their beaks open in calls. The delicate lines around the insects bring a motion that makes it clear they are not just pinned to a board. Andea finds much of her inspiration in the natural world and explains that she is “particularly interested in the friction, overlap, and fragile balance between human and non-human worlds. When [passing} by a gnarly tree planted long ago, or watching the choreography of flocks of birds, [she is] inspired to express [her] observations visually.” Andrea has been a member of Waltham Open Studios since 2010 and is the artist who is currently responsible for making Waltham Open Studios happen every year!
