With a wink of the shutter, Katie Karlberg seeks to bring empowerment to her photograph’s subject. Since purchasing her first DSLR camera in 2014, she has captured nearly 200 weddings and many, many happy couples and families. As a wedding photographer, she noticed a pattern of brilliant women looking in the mirror and seeing only faults, real or imagined. These experiences inspired her to transition her specialty to boudoir photography: “I started to wonder: what if I created a space where women could see themselves through eyes of love instead of criticism? That's how the Renaissance Room was born!” The Renaissance Room provides a safe space to silence inner critics and celebrate the beauty of the self. Katie loves to incorporate poses, lighting, and colors influenced by Renaissance paintings. When asked what advice she returns to again and again, Katie said “Comparison is the thief of joy! The more I can focus on what inspires me organically, the more I fall in love with my own work.”
This will be her first year at Waltham Open Studios. Be sure to visit her studio on Sunday, 11/2 (because she’ll be photographing a wedding on Saturday, 11/1).
Where else can you find her work?
