Michael B Wilson has been a beloved member of Waltham Open Studios since 1988. Working with acrylic and oil paints, his paintings are bright and often oscillate into the surreal. His website features a tab exclusively dedicated to his paintings of Don Quixote, the idealist knight from the Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes. Wilson’s paintings feature a somewhat serious-faced Don Quixote with his stead and blade, but the bright colors and surrealist style add some levity that perhaps would otherwise be provided by the squire, Sancho. Ten years ago, Wilson’s began his latest sculptures as a continuation of these paintings and drawings. He utilizes what is available around the studio – sticks, wire, string, plaster, etc – and brings the “2-D drawings and paintings of Don Quixote and his mighty steed, Rosinante, into real space.” In addition to literature, Michael B Wilson also draws inspiration from music, painting, and anywhere else his eye lands. When asked what advice he returns to again and again, he says “Keep going, don’t quit. Trust your feelings.”
