Artist Spotlight: Hilde-Kari Guttormsen

Updated: Sep 22, 2025

Lincoln Studios, Studio #205

Hilde-Kari Guttormsen works in any medium she can get her hands on. In 2011, when she began studying art, she intended to focus on painting. But after studying with Alisha Kerlin and Candice Ivy at MassArt, it became clear to her she needed to combine 2D and 3D forms: “For each project/series, I try to find the most interesting and challenging medium to visualize the questions I have.” Her art is often inspired by everyday life, nature, books, art, or movies. The intricacy of her pieces reflect a clear attention to detail and expert craft: “My art practice is about seeing, questioning, and examining the relationship between biological and cultural evolution, between nature and humans, and the fluidity of nature and of the human condition.” Hilde-Kari has no shortage of fellow artists she is grateful for supporting her development, she mentions Kathleen Volp, Carol McMahon, and Cathleen Daley, along with the thriving community at Waltham Open Studios which she has been a part of since 2018.
