Meghan Murray, Building 18
Meghan Murray’s vibrant oil paintings give a sense of looking through layers of time. The images evoke nostalgic specters of family memories and photographs. She began composing with oil paints in high school. Her pieces have always had a relationship with photographs, but her current focus using “the found photo” began when she was a graduate student at Boston University. Working from found photography and objects means she often finds inspiration at ephemera sales and junk markets. She says that most of her “most exciting ideas [happen] when [her] eyes and brain aren't overly occupied, so long drives, walks, or even hot showers are helpful.” When asked what advice she returns to again and again, she says: “I have a notorious habit for fine detail, often when it's not necessary. I try to revisit advice from other artists and teachers: take a step back, take a break, work larger, use a bigger tool. Come to my studio to see the battle evident in the paintings!” Meghan is a recent addition to the community, and this year will be her second Waltham Open Studios.
