Anne Johnstone’s “psychologically rich” acrylic paintings utilize the viewers’ proprioception. The figures are not always immediately recognizable, but appear vibrant and balanced, like watching a dream back through water. Her paintings are often inspired by textures and the “intensities of [her] thought processes.” She explains that inspiration can take place anywhere and her ideas most often appear when she experiences quiet reflection regarding her life as a whole or current situation. She has been working with acrylic paints since high school when her art teacher first inspired her to experiment with them. A participant of Waltham Open Studios since 2023, she considers an artist community important to prevent isolation and to have other creatives to share triumphs and challenges with.
When asked what advice she returns to again and again, she said: “Your artwork is bolder than you are, it will show you the way.”
