Carolyn Mackin’s inspiration is often tucked into the layered beauty of ancient cities. She draws from their twisting streets, hidden passways, and the intricacies of arched doorways. Her paintings evoke the same depth and mystery of those old cities, with bright colors and whimsical patterns. Mackin began painting in 2011 after many years as a fine art photographer. She explains this need for this transition: “I longed for a tactile dialogue with my work and the freedom of dancing with large canvases. It felt like a leap of faith, yet intuition called me—and still guides every step of my practice.” Mackin’s intuition seems to be interwoven into every step of her creation. When asked what advice she returns always to, again she alludes to intuition She says to “expand from the spark” – find the small part of a piece that is resonating and expand. This will be her first year with Waltham Open Studios.
